Maria Regan Gonzalez became the first mayor of color in Richfield and the first Latina mayor in the state. Gonzalez grew up with two cultures with her native-Minnesotan father and mother who immigrated from Mexico. She has been working on her master’s degree in public health, while at the same time working full time at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota. Luz María Frías is an attorney who is known for her advocacy around issues of race and gender equity. Currently, she is one of the cohosts of MPR’s podcast Counter Storiesand in July 2020, Luz was appointed Deputy Attorney General of the state of Minnesota.
Her activism and contributions are frequently labeled as “radical” and used as an excuse to discredit and undermine the importance of her works. Born in Mexico City, raised in Irapuato and Minnesota, she joined her father in Minnesota years after he left their town looking for a better future for his family. Family separation, border consciousness and transnational economy shaped Emilia to become an immigration activist, intersectional feminist and advocate for human rights. Emilia is alumna of the Hubert H. Humphrey Public Policy Fellows Program, the Roy Wilkins Community Fellows and Emerging Leader Fellow with America Votes.
We used quality assurance procedures to monitor the fidelity of program delivery in both intervention curricula. A rater attended every AMIGAS and general health promotion session and recorded whether all activities were implemented with fidelity. Our results support the efficacy of this linguistically and culturally adapted HIV intervention among ethnically diverse, predominantly foreign-born Latina women. We developed and assessed AMIGAS (Amigas, Mujeres Latinas, Inform andonos, Gui andonos, y Apoy andonos contra el SIDA ), a culturally congruent HIV prevention intervention for Latina women adapted from SiSTA , an intervention for African American women. With public service announcements, a speaker series, and panel discussions, the initiative is aiming to bring awareness to the pay gap and promote parity at work. Telemundo is also partnering with the University of Miami School of Business to present an executive leadership training program. Monica Gil of Telemundo speaks to Know Your Value founder Mika Brzezinski about what it will take to close the wage gap for Latinas.
This autonomy is particularly important considering some researchers believe that Latinas may be particularly vulnerable to domestic violence issues. These domestic abuse struggles result from a combination of violent partners and bureaucratic complications of the US immigration system. Domestic issues among immigrants are potentially exacerbated by language barriers, economic dependence, low levels of education and income, poor knowledge of services, undocumented status, lack of a support system, and the immigration experience in general. According to the Rutgers School of Social Work, around 17% of Latina immigrants are victims of Domestic Violence. This violence can manifest in different ways, and is often difficult to diagnose when it the result of verbal threats rather than physical abuse.
Protesters Gather In La Mesa To Demand Justice For Women Of Color
Conversely, Mexican and Costa Rican women are often migrating from a patriarchal husband-wife system, with just 13% and 22% of households headed by women in these countries, respectively. Puerto Rico lies somewhere between these two systems, sharing aspects of both patriarchal and matrifocal systems. According to a study published by the National Institute of Health, these patterns correspond with relatively low female participation in the labor force. Because the Latina ethnicity encompasses a large variety of people, including people of various races from various countries, it is difficult to define the Latina Family experience in a simple way. To do so would oversimplify this population and result to stereotyping, as the experience of Latinas is just as nuanced as the women who comprise this ethnic group.
I’m now the founder of a Los Angeles based startup called BUENA, helping people make the most out of their free time — and setting a tone for creatives and women in the startup community. Your response to that comment seems to ignore the fact that not all latinx are Spanish speaking.
Beginning with the Watershed amendment of 1965, the United States shifted their policy to encourage the migration of whole families by issuing less visas to unskilled single men and more visas to families. While men typically migrate at a young age concentration of 18-25, females migrate at generally consistent rates at all age groups. While Latinos almost always migrate to the United States in search of work, Latina migration follows a pattern heavily tied to family life. Because of this social expectation, many of Hispanic women’s efforts to institute measures to combat their own excess weights, or those of their families, would be derided as socially unacceptable by Hispanic culture, that is, if a mother were even brave enough to attempt these efforts in the first place. This work was supported by institutional funds from the University of Pennsylvania and National Institutes of Health grants .
The word Latino is short for LatinoAmericano, which translates to Latin American. It was originally adopted in the US for the purpose of additional categorization of the population in the United States Census. It is important to note that Latino/a is an ethnic category, and one that encompasses various racial groups. Latinas are women of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central American, South American, or Spanish origin.
- We then field-tested the adapted curriculum, and Latina community representatives reviewed it before implementation.
- The adapted curriculum was translated into Spanish by a translation services company and was reviewed, modified, back-translated into English, and finally approved by the study team.
- Information obtained from the focus groups, Latina HIV prevention workers, community representatives, and a review of the literature highlighted the importance of making the intervention culturally congruent.
- Before developing the AMIGAS adaptation, we conducted 3 focus groups with ethnically and culturally diverse Latina women to explore the factors that increased their HIV risks.
That’s why Gil said no one is more powerful that the Latina consumer, voter or businesswoman and that they are unstoppable when they know their value. Research has also showed Latinas are likely to take the lead on many household decisions compared to non-Hispanic women. They are also in charge of the largest average households in the U.S. with 3.26 members compared to 2.42 for non-Hispanics. Today, more than half of http://www.classicrally.it/2020/07/19/all-about-mexican-girls/ are the breadwinners, shouldering the costs of caring for their families. Latin Women’s Initiative has blossomed into one of Houston’s top Hispanic fundraising organizations that provides financial donations and volunteers to nonprofits that primarily assist Hispanic women and children.
This resulted in about a 10 percentage point decrease in the response rate for the CPS in March and April 2020 compared with preceding months and an even greater decrease in May 2020. It is possible that some measures of employment and its demographic composition are affected by these changes in data collection. The decrease in employment in the first three months of the COVID-19 recession is more than double the decrease effected by the Great Recession over two years.
Why do Hispanics love to ignore the existence of non-Spanish speaking latinas? The constant erasure of afro-Latinos and those of us who don’t come from Spanish speaking countries in these articles is horrendous.
Latinas with gestational diabetes may be at risk for conditions such as high blood pressure after pregnancy. Additionally, women with gestational diabetes will need to be tested for Type 2 diabetes 4 to 12 weeks after a baby is born. If you don’t test positive for Type 2 diabetes at that follow-up visit, make sure to get tested as part of your yearly physical.
The sessions took place on consecutive Thursday evenings at the Miami–Dade County HIV/AIDS Office, with 7 to 8 participants per group. A single trained Latina health educator delivered the general health intervention in Spanish to the women who were randomized to the comparison group. The single-session, 2.5-hour interactive group interventions also took place on Thursday evenings, with an average of 7 to 8 women. Comparison participants viewed a video in Spanish that provided basic HIV information. As with the AMIGAS intervention, we field-tested the general health intervention with Latina women recruited in Miami.
If so, the critical periods suggested by the February and July peaks would correspond to the late third trimester and middle first trimester, respectively. We know of no way to empirically discriminate between these competing inferences of critical periods. Results of testing for critical periods by gestational age at the time of the election found that preterm births peaked in February and July 2017 for male and female infants . Assuming, consistent with the existing literature, that the election rather than subsequent events marked the onset of stress among Latina women, these peaks would correspond to infants conceived or in their second trimester of gestation around the time of the election.
One difference between the COVID-19 recession and past recessions is in the significance of teleworking in saving jobs at the moment. Workers with a college degree or higher education are much more likely to have the option to telework – 62% could in February compared with 22% of high school graduates who did not go to college, for example. While this helped limit job losses for college graduates from February to May, their experience in the Great Recession was different – their employment was virtually unchanged from 2007 to 2009. Notably, 4.8 million adults ages 55 and older, nearing the traditional retirement age, have lost their jobs in recent months.
A concept known as the “social identity theory” explains how people derive their identity from the groups they are welcomed to based on commonalities. There are in-groups and out-groups, and people find worth in being in those in-groups. For the most part, researchers have concentrated on Caucasian girls and women from middle- to upper-class backgrounds, with few doctors even equipped with the language and questions to ask Latina sufferers. But even though researchers and physicians seem to overwhelmingly disregard Latinas in their work, eating disorders do not discriminate.
